YES Best Protein water is pretty hard to get your head around, so we thought we'd see what the nutritionists had to say. Sports nutrition specialist Claire Baseley says: "With zero sugar and 20g protein, the nutritional profile is extremely positive. It's an excellent alternative to sugary energy drinks". If you are in and out of the gym all the time and struggle to get the protein you need in your diet, or rely heavily on sugary soft drinks, this is well worth having in your bag. NO However, Australia nutritionist and health expert Zoe Palmer-Wright has her reservations. "I can see the appeal of this purely from a convenience perspective for those who train a lot or want to build lean muscle, however there are potential issues." It all comes down to how much you're working out and how much protein you really need. Much like the questions that have been raised over the over-use of shakes, there are a lot of gym-goers who are consuming more than they need, and not from real food sources (with other key nutrients). The protein is also taken from whey so if you have sensitivity to that form of protein in shakes, you'll experience the same with the water. Another downside of this product is that it contains the artificial sweetener sucralose which can actually provoke sugar cravings. Energy: The caffeinated water category attracts consumers looking for new ways to get an energy kick, outside of conventional energy drinks. This category is especially attractive to consumers who prefer not to drink coffee or tea when they’re looking for an afternoon pick-me-up. Sales of energy drinks topped $13 billion last year, indicating that ingredients like guarana and ginseng remain relevant. Wellness: Many of the categories above have a combination of vitamins and minerals, but this category highlights additional nutritional benefits. From probiotics that help with digestion, electrolytes that enhance performance, to fiber that helps with satiety and weight loss, these wellness-focused flavored waters are fighting for product differentiation in the grocery aisle. Powered by protein: To achieve the goal of 45-55 grams of protein daily, many consumers look for products that deliver protein in convenient ways. Enter best protein water. Formulating with protein isn’t easy, especially in high-acid environments, but protein fortified water is catching on. Innovation in carbonation: The last few years have seen some new product innovation in sparkling waters. La Croix’s sales have tripled to $175 million since 2009. In addition to new, innovative flavors such as cranberry lime, orange vanilla, and blackberry cucumber, brands are now flavoring their sparkling water with fruit essence and fresh pressed fruits and vegetables.
